The occasionally spongy nature of ethics has, in this 21st century, become an important factor for how organizations, for-profit and non-profit alike, are viewed– and sometimes how well or poorly they operate. Unlike much of the law, ethical standards may seem far more subjective and different behaviors are more open to argument as to whether they do or do not cross the line. And, unlike the law, there is not a court or other authority of last resort outside the organization, though it is certainly the case that the application of organizationally defined ethical standards may well lead to lawsuits. Not surprisingly, lawyers may be called upon to advise about or draft or interpret a Code of Ethics and, as a part of any legal check-up, the review of an existing Code or the lack of a Code may be an appropriate subject. In this practical webinar, you will receive step-by-step guidance on how to approach drafting and enforcing codes of ethics in your role as a lawyer.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Outline reasons for a client organization to have or not have a Code.
- Identify Client Goals for a Code and identify stakeholders to have input in the development or amendment of a Code.
- Determine how requests for stakeholder input may be constrained and processed.
- Assess practical Risks in developing a Code.
- Review elements and underlying principles of a Code.
- Address procedural Considerations for Enforcement and drafting considerations.
- Effective adopt and implement a Code.
