In this practical webinar, Excel expert, David Ringstrom, CPA, shows you how to implement internal control features within your Excel. Using a simple invoice form as a teaching aid, he demonstrates several ways you can control users’ actions within an Excel spreadsheet and protect worksheets and workbooks from unauthorized changes. You will learn about the benefits of using the VLOOKUP function, the Data Validation feature, the Conditional Formatting feature, and more.
You will see each technique demonstrated at least twice: first, on a PowerPoint slide with numbered steps, and second, in the subscription-based Office 365 version of Excel. David draws your attention to any differences in the older versions of Excel (2019, 2016, 2013, and earlier) during the presentation, as well as in his detailed handouts. You will also receive an Excel workbook that includes most of the examples used during the webcast.
Office 365 is a subscription-based product that provides new-feature updates as often as monthly. Conversely, the perpetual licensed versions of Excel have feature sets that don’t change. Perpetual licensed versions have year numbers, such as Excel 2019, Excel 2016, and so on.
You will learn how to:
- Ensure proper VLOOKUP integrity by using Data Validation to create an in-cell drop-down list.
- Use Conditional Formatting to identify unlocked cells into which data can be entered.
- Limit users to entering whole numbers in a worksheet cell by way of Data Validation.
- Use the Find & Select command to locate cells that contain Data Validation.
- Use Excel’s IF function to make certain fields appear blank until a required input is provided.
- Toggle the locked status of a worksheet cell on or off by way of a custom shortcut.
- Improve the integrity of spreadsheets with Excel’s VLOOKUP function.
- Tweak Data Validation settings for a given range of cells.
- Use Excel’s IFERROR function to mask # sign errors, such as #N/A.
- Protect sensitive information by hiding formulas within an Excel workbook.

What is a webinar?
A webinar is simply a seminar that you attend online. You either watch a live video feed of the speaker or listen to the speaker through your computer, tablet or phone’s audio. You see the speaker’s slides, videos, and other presentation materials on your screen.
Can I ask questions during the webinar?
Yes. During the live webinar, you may submit questions and comments and the speaker will respond verbally. For a recorded webinar, your questions will be emailed to the speaker. You will typically receive a response from the speaker within two business days.
Can I attend using a tablet or smartphone?

If I can’t attend a webinar live, can I view the recording later?
Yes. Shortly after each live program ends, we send all webinar registrants a link to the webinar recording. You can view the recording as many times as you like after the live webinar for up to 12 months.

In most cases, the answer is yes. Recorded webinars are not eligible for CLE credit in the following states: AR, KS, MS, NE, and RI. In all other jurisdictions, recorded programs are eligible for credit. In addition, CPE credit is not available for recorded webinars. Please note that recorded webinars are only eligible for a certain period of time based on the jurisdiction.
