The recent election year has brought the issue of political speech at work to the forefront. Thirty five percent of employers openly share their political views with employees; 36% of employees discuss politics at work; of those who did, 23% said it led to heated discussion or an argument. Only 25% of organizations have a written policy on political activities. 80% of employees believe it would be illegal for their employers to terminate them for engaging in political speech at work. In this webinar, you’ll learn how to effectively manage political speech at work. Upon completion of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify the pros and cons of political speech at work
  • Discuss the First Amendment and its role in controlling political speech at work
  • Discuss the differences in public and private workplaces as it relates to political speech
  • Describe what employers may do to support a candidate at work
  • Recognize how the National Labor Relations Act applies to politically charged speech
  • Interpret key federal and state anti-discrimination laws and their nexus with political speech
  • Explain the consequences for employees and for organizations when political speech occurs in the workplace
  • Describe the role social media plays in political speech and the workplace
  • Discuss the ethics of political speech at work
  • Determine any changes in your dress code related to political speech
  • Describe specific laws related to political speech inside and outside the workplace that may impact a worker’s job
  • List suggestions for political speech policy in the workplace.
