You will learn how to overcome writer’s block and quickly write reports, use a template that will ensure that your reports are clear and comprehensive, and ensure that your reports are legally defensible if challenged in litigation.

The Writing Process

• Why should I start writing the report before I interview the first witness?
• How can I use the report to structure my entire investigation and plan for each interview?
• How do I use the “Madman—Architect—Carpenter” method of writing to overcome “writer’s block” and greatly increase the speed at which I write reports?

Report Format

• What sections should I include in the report?
• How do I best document the source for each factual assertion I make?
• How do I document credibility determinations?
• Should I include recommendations for discipline in the report?
• What should I include—and not include—in the report?

Legal Considerations in Investigative Reports

• Do I always have to write a report?
• When is the attorney-client privilege applicable?
• What steps must I take to maintain the attorney-client privilege?
• Who is entitled to see a copy of the report?
• Should I retain handwritten and/or typed notes after I write the report?
• For how long should I maintain a copy of the report, interview notes and other documents?

Report Writing Manual

Each attendee receives a comprehensive, step-by-step manual, Writing Investigative Reports ($99 value) that attendees can use as a guide in writing their own reports in real life.
